Yuvraj Singh Assembles India’s Best XI for T20 World Cup

As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, Yuvraj Singh, the tournament’s ambassador, shared his insights on the Indian team’s prospects. India has announced a strong 15-member squad and four travelling reserves led by Rohit Sharma. The tournament is set to begin on June 1 in the West Indies and USA.

India’s Quest for T20 World Cup Glory

India will aim to reclaim the T20 World Cup title, a trophy they last won in the inaugural edition in 2007. Yuvraj Singh, a key player in that victorious squad, expressed his eagerness to see India lift the trophy again.

Yuvraj’s Ideal Line-Up

Yuvraj identified his preferred players for the tournament, starting with the top order: “I think Rohit (Sharma) and (Yashasvi) Jaiswal should definitely open,” he said. “Virat (Kohli) at No.3, and then you have Surya (Yadav) at four. I’d like to see a mix of left-hand, right-hand combinations, as it’s tougher to bowl to.”

Wicket-Keeper’s Role: Pant vs. Samson

Yuvraj favoured Rishabh Pant over Sanju Samson for the wicket-keeper’s role, despite both being in excellent form in the IPL. Sanju Samson has led Rajasthan Royals impressively, scoring 504 runs in 14 matches. Pant made a remarkable comeback after a severe car accident, scoring 446 runs in 13 matches.

“I’d probably go for Rishabh,” Yuvraj said. “Sanju is in great form, but Rishabh is a left-hander with massive potential to win games for India, which he has shown in the past.”

Hardik Pandya’s Form and Leadership

Despite Hardik Pandya’s struggles with form, Yuvraj remains optimistic about his impact at the T20 World Cup. Pandya, who has battled injuries and inconsistent performances, scored only 216 runs and took 11 wickets in the IPL.

“Hardik’s not done well in the IPL, but looking at his contributions for India, his presence is important,” Yuvraj noted. “I think his bowling and fitness will be crucial, and he might do something special in this World Cup.”

Shivam Dube’s Inclusion

Yuvraj highlighted Shivam Dube’s selection, praising his consistent IPL performance with 396 runs in 14 matches for Chennai Super Kings. “I think Dube’s form made it important for him to be in the squad. He can make a significant impact in the middle or lower order.”

Unfortunate Omissions

Rinku Singh and Shubman Gill, despite their impressive performances, were relegated to the reserve list. Rinku has been exceptional in T20Is, while Gill has been prolific for India.

“It’s unfortunate for Rinku and Shubman,” Yuvraj said. “Both have shown significant improvement and consistency, but selecting a World Cup squad involves tough decisions.”

Yuzvendra Chahal’s Return

Yuvraj was pleased with Yuzvendra Chahal’s inclusion, marking his return to T20I cricket. Chahal’s recent IPL performance, where he took 14 wickets in 11 matches, was instrumental in his comeback.

“Chahal’s been bowling really well,” Yuvraj remarked. “With wickets likely to slow down in the second half of the World Cup, having solid spin options is vital. Our pace attack, featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh, also looks strong.”

India’s World Cup Schedule

India’s T20 World Cup campaign kicks off on June 5 against Ireland. The highlight will be the India vs. Pakistan clash on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. India will also face USA on June 12 and Canada on June 15 to conclude their Group A matches.

As India prepares for the T20 World Cup, Yuvraj Singh’s insights and the selected squad reflect a blend of experience and potential, aiming to end the long wait for another T20 World Cup title.
