The WSL Title Race is set for another exciting ending. Chelsea FC’s Women’s team’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspurs helped them reclaim their spot at the top of the table. They displaced the Manchester City women’s team, who lost their game to Arsenal on May 5. Emma Hayes‘ team now requires to secure a win on the final matchday against familiar opponents, Manchester United to get to their Sixth consecutive WSL title.
City, who were on top of the table lost their game against Arsenal 2-1 on May 5 to hurt their chances of winning the WSL for the first time since 2016. They will have to give their best against the Aston Villa team and hope that Chelsea slip up against Manchester United on the final WSL weekend.
Chelsea was in a similar situation last season. Needing a win to secure the WSL title, they faced Reading on the final matchday. However, they played like there was no pressure and ran through the Reading defence to score three goals past them.
This time their opponents are going to be a challenging Manchester United side, who are high on confidence after their dominant display in the FA Cup Final. Marc Skinner’s team were able to beat the North London side 4-0 and secure their first-ever trophy. They will be looking to spoil Chelsea’s party by putting in a good performance at Old Trafford.
Emma Hayes’ last dance at Chelsea could culminate with the WSL trophy
Emma Hayes has a big hand in transforming the women’s football game to where it is today. She has helped develop the Chelsea women’s team into a global force, but after 12 years is set to bid adieu to the club after the current WSL season. The 47-year-old will join the US women’s national team as their head coach following the 2023-24 season.
In her time as the Chelsea boss, Hayes has won the WSL 6 times. Five of them have come in a row, which shows the dominance that the team has displayed in the competition. Saturday will see Hayes on the Chelsea touchline one last time. They will be up against a Manchester United side, who have proven to be their rivals in the past couple of years.
The only thing that was missing from Hayes’ trophy cabinet was the Champions League. The team were close to moving into the final, but their hearts were broken by the Barcelona women’s team. While the disappointment of not being able to win the women’s UCL is still there, Hayes will be focusing on clinching yet another WSL title before she departs the club.
All the team have to do is secure a win against Manchester United and as difficult as it sounds, Chelsea has the talent that it takes to get the job done. The Blues have only lost to United once in the last ten games. They will be looking to put their best foot forward and clinch a win at Old Trafford to give the perfect send-off to their legendary manager.
