Wimbledon cancels outdoor play, stars forced to stop playing

Wimbledon called off on outdoor courts for the rest of Friday evening. Including Daniil Medvedev’s match against Jan-Lennard Struff, Ben Shelton’s clash against Denis Shapovalov, and Ugo Humbert’s battle against Brandon Nakashima. The games were stopped due to gloomy weather on outside courts at Wimbledon. According to the Referee’s Office, the matches were postponed due to rain on Court 2 through 18 games cannot be played on those courts. 

It has been notified the cancellation of 69 matches till Tuesday afternoon. The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has stated the grounds pass and tickets purchased for Court 2 and 3 before 5 pm will be fully refunded. Medvedev, who was facing Struff on No. 2 Court, was ahead 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 1-1 before play was stopped. The 2023 semi-finalist is looking to make another knockout round in the tournament. 

On No. 3 Court, Shelton and Shapovalov were only able to play five games together. Shapovalov will serve at 2-3 as play restarts. Both guys have previously advanced to the Grand Slam competition semifinals. Caroline Wozniacki and Leylah Fernandez also had to pause their game in the middle of an important deciding set. The former had a long discussion with the referee to suspend the match for darkness before her request was finally answered.

But the game was not suspended until the following day, instead the two were suddenly bumped up from Court 12 to Court 1. On Court 12, Ugo Humbert and Brandon Nakashima were fighting in a close game when play was halted. Humbert leads by 7-6(9), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-6. The crucial fourth-set tie-break will take place on Saturday. 

Day five began with a washout, with no play on the outside courts commencing on schedule. World No.1 Jannik Sinner defeated Miomir Kecmanovic on Saturday, in three straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. His opponent for the RO16 has not been decided yet as there are games left for the third round.
