Novak Djokovic maintained his lead at Wimbledon with a win over British wildcard Jacob Fearnley. In the women’s category, top seed Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round with an easy win over Petra Martic. Fearnley will also remember being congratulated by one of the sport’s all-time greats after producing a spectacular crosscourt shot that flew past Djokovic, earning him a breakpoint in the game.
He will undoubtedly recall the exhilaration of breaking the 24-time Grand Slam champion for the first time when the Serbian hit a backhand into the net and the ensuing ecstatic standing ovation. The seven-time champion was given a good fight by 277th-ranked Jacob Fearnley.
He reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory in the 3-hour-long match. Tennis fans will remember the tough fight Jacob gave to the 37-year-old. The Serbian will be facing Alexei Popyrin where he won a hard-fought 3-6 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 victory against Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Iga Swiatek eased through to the third round.
In the women’s group, top seed Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round with a straight sets win over Croatian 6-4, 6-3. It underscored her status as the top player in the world. The No.1 seeded player struggled at times against Martic’s strong serves and groundstrokes.
The 23-year-old Polish won at the Madrid and Rome Opens as well as taking the Roland Garros title. This is Switek’s 21st win in a row. Swiaitek has won five Grand Slams but never progressed past the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
Swiatek has a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages as she faces Yulia Putintseva in the third round who defeated No. 27 seed Katerina Siniakova in her second-round match, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. The Polish have won all four prior matches against Putintseva in straight sets, but this will be their first on grass court. The former will be in desperate need to win the Grand Slam this time around.
