Why Is The Chelsea Managerial Position A Tough One For Any Young Manager?

Chelsea have parted ways with manager Mauricio Pochettino after the two parties mutually agreed that this was the right decision. The Argentinian helped the club finish sixth in the Premier League and make two trips to Wembley in the 2023-24 season. Despite the poor run of results in the first half of the campaign, Poch rallied his troops and did a great job since the turn of 2024 to ensure European football at Chelsea next season.

However, the Blues had to make the decision to part ways with him as his thoughts were not aligned with those of the clubs. According to reports, the 52-year-old wanted to have a say on transfer decisions, which the owners did not agree with, leading to him leaving the club after just one season. The team are now focused on bringing in a new face, who according to multiple sources will be a young coach, with an attractive footballing philosophy.

Sky Sports reported that the club had not met any coach in the build-up to the meeting they had with Pochettino as a respect to the manager. But they will now commence their search for a new lead man and it is expected to have some exciting young faces on the forefront. Kieran McKenna, who helped Ipswich Town get into the Premier League for the first time since 2002 is expected to be a name to watch out for. However, deploying a young coach at a club like Chelsea is an experiment that could backfire.

Chelsea board has made questionable decisions

Chelsea are one of the biggest teams in England. Although they have not been successful in the past couple of years, there is no denying that they are a winning club. Trophies have been pivotal in the manager’s having their job at Chelsea, but that time has changed now. Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and his consortium, the team have built a new identity and has been in transition.

Now they clearly have shown signs of improvement, but the departure of Mauricio Pochettino is another step back for the club. His demands over having more voice on transfer decisions were reasonable as the club had made a few impulsive decisions over the previous transfer windows. However, the board were not ready to cave into his demands and showed him the way out after just a year. The same would be the case with any new manager as the owners at the club would not want to give up their control on big decisions.

While their take on a decision should be final, giving them the keys to bring in new players is not right as they do not have the footballing acumen needed to run a club. Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are the two names that are in charge of bringing in new talent into the club. Although they have made some rash decisions, the Chelsea project is the one for the future according to the board.

A young manager would struggle at Chelsea

Hiring a young manager is a move by the Chelsea owners to just employ another puppet who will work under them. While there are some great young managers out there, bringing them to the club would only be a move by the board to put themselves ahead of the club.

The Todd Boehly-led consortium brought in Graham Potter with the intention of making him the leader of their project. But he was not able to handle the pressure of being a coach of a club like Chelsea. Although they are on the right track, the next managerial hiring is key, but the club management will have to put the team’s needs above theirs if they want the team to win trophies soon.
