Why are European clubs chasing Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim?

Reuben Amorim is one of the hottest managerial prospects in football. The Portuguese coach has been linked to clubs like Liverpool, West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester United. He has transformed Sporting Club De Portugal into a force to be reckoned with and is helping them win the Portuguese national league for the second time in four seasons.

Some big teams are in the hunt for a manager in the summer and Ruben Amorim is on the shortlist for nearly all of them. It was reported that Ruben Amorim recently met with representatives of West Ham United, but nothing has been finalised yet. Liverpool are hoping to acquire his services and make him the successor to Jurgen Klopp.

Undoubtedly, the 39-year-old has already won a lot of praise for his work with Sporting Club De Portugal. He is already being compared to fellow Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho. The Special One has a stacked resume and if Amorim is drawing comparisons to him in his short career, there is certainly something exciting about his presence on the touchline.

What makes Ruben Amorim special?

Ruben Amorim started his coaching career in the third tier of Portuguese football. He later managed to get a job as the head coach of the Braga reserve team. His exceptional work there helped him get a promotion as the first team coach. He took over the reins of the team with Braga placed eighth, but he helped them go on a run and finish third to secure European qualification.

His brilliant work at Braga did not go unnoticed as Sporting Club De Portugal offered him their head coaching position. Ruben Amorim was given a massive 10 million contract for three years. He showed that Sporting’s gamble on a manager who had only been in the top flight for a little over four months was true as he led them to their first league title in 19 years. The team had lost just one game throughout the season and conceded only 20 goals in 34 games to lift the title.

Ruben Amorim’s playing style is unique

His ability to play with a three-at-the-back system is what separates him from the other managers in the world. Playing with three central defenders is not easy, but Amorim’s communication with his players is what makes this effective.

The three-defender system helps teams but after a while opposition starts figuring out the strategy and playing accordingly. However, Amori’s three-at-the-back system has been brilliant and helped get the best out of his offensive players. This season, his team is once again leading the table and they are doing it by scoring the most and conceding the second-fewest goals in the league.

He has groomed some talented players in the club and made them world-class. Some of the names that have succeeded under Amorim are Victor Gyokeres, Pedro Porro, Joao Palinha, Pedro Goncalves, Matteus Nunes and Nuno Mendes.

Ruben Amorim is only 39 and is already one of the most touted coaches in Europe. His playing style is different from many others and it will be interesting to see how he fairs in a bigger European team. The Portuguese gaffer is yet another example of how a player turned coach can transform a football team.
