The return of any star player from injury is bound to galvanise a squad. But even by those standards, Kevin De Bruyne’s return to Manchester City has boosted the Cityzens to a whole new level. The 32-year-old creative midfielder had been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury against Burnley on the opening day of the season.
However, De Bruyne’s absence almost went unnoticed as City found a way not only to cope but to also thrive without him. He returned to action against Newcastle United two weeks back and showed everyone just how good he truly is.
De Bruyne came on with Manchester City trailing 1-2 away from home and single-handedly turned the game on its head with his performance. First, he produced a sublime finish to help City restore parity and then produced a wonderful pass to set up Oscar Bobb for the winner.
De Bruyne’s performance on his comeback was a testament to just what he brings to this already impeccable City side. Despite being one of the most talented sides in the world, the presence of De Bruyne adds a creative element like no one else does.
When it comes to unlocking stubborn defences with incisive passing, De Bruyne is perhaps the best in the world. This is also the reason why most teams struggle to keep a clean sheet against City despite adopting a low block in defence. We saw another example of this yesterday against Burnley when the Belgian rolled in Julian Alvarez to set up City’s second goal.
As we head into the business end of the European football season, De Bruyne’s return could not have come at a better time for City and at a worse time for their opponents. If De Bruyne’s performances in his first two games since his return are anything to go by, Manchester City are well on their way to defending their Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.
However, their biggest challengers on the domestic and European front might be Liverpool who are on a mission to give their manager Jurgen Klopp a fitting farewell before he bids adieu at the end of the season.
