Virat Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck in T20Is for the first time on Wednesday. He now been dismissed for a duck 35 times in international cricket, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar who held the previous record at 34 ducks.
On Wednesday, Virat Kohli had a rare off day with the bat in the third T20I against Afghanistan at the M Chinaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as he was dismissed for a golden duck. This was the first time Kohli was dismissed for a first-ball duck in T20Is.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat, but India got off to a bad start as Yashasvi Ahmad was dismissed by Fareed Jaiswal in the third over. The dismissal brought Kohli to the crease and the M Chinaswamy crowd was expecting a Kohli masterclass. But they were left disappointed as Kohli departed for a first-ball duck after mishitting a short ball from Farid Ahmad straight into the hands of Ibrahim Zadran.
This is the first time that Kohli has been dismissed for a golden duck in T20Is and the fifth time that he has been dismissed for a duck in T20Is overall. More notably, Kohli has now overtaken Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most number of ducks in international cricket with 35 ducks. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and and Virender Sehwag have 33 and 31 international ducks to their name respectively
Worth his weight in gold
Despite having a rare off day with the bat yesterday, what separates Kohli from the rest is that he continues to find ways to contribute to the team’s cause. Yesterday, the 35-year-old proved his worth in the field by making an incredible boundary save off Karim Janat in the 17th over. He then went a step further and took an incredible running catch to dismiss Najibullah Zadran in the next over. His acrobatic efforts not only saved a certain six but also proved decisive in altering the outcome of the match.
