Vincent Kompany has officially been named as the Bayern Munich head coach. The former Manchester City legend coached the Burnley team in the Premier League last season. His side was relegated after finishing the campaign with 24 points. Despite not being able to showcase his brilliance in the top flight of English football, Kompany’s personality and potential as a coach was enough for Bayern to hand over the reins of the club to him.
The 2022-23 season with Burnley was what highlighted Vincent Kompany’s abilities as a coach. He helped Burnley finish at the top of the Championship with 101 points. On their way to securing promotion, the Clarets scored the most goals and conceded the least. They were dominant right from the first game and secured the promotion with seven games in hand. At the end of the season, Kompany had lucrative offers to coach some of the top European clubs, but he decided to refuse them and continue staying with Burnley.
Bayern Munich are heading into the next season after finishing third in the Bundesliga. It was the first time in over a decade that they had gone without winning a trophy in a season. Under Thomas Tuchel’s tutelage, the Bavarians failed to dominate like they were used to and this led to the club deciding to part ways with him mid-way through the season. However, he was given time until the end of the campaign as the club were in the hunt to find his replacement. Many managers were interviewed and even finalised, but nothing seemed to materialise. In the end, the management decided to give young and energetic Vincent Kompany the chance to lead them back to domestic and European glory.
Why did Bayern Munich give Vincent Kompany the managerial job?
After getting rejected by several top contenders for the Bayern job, the management decided to turn their attention to Vincent Kompany. This certainly doesn’t mean that they do not believe in his coaching abilities as they would never let any individual manage the club just because they weren’t getting what they wanted.
What makes Kompany a suitable manager for Bayern is his style of football. While the relegation to the Championship was a stain on his resume, it happened because of the lack of technicality the players in Burnley had. When the team was in the Championship, they were able to dominate possession and create attacks due to the level of competition there. However, at Bayern, Kompany will have the luxury of coaching some of the best players in the game. This will give him a chance to prove to the world that he is a capable manager.
Vincent Kompany has spent most of his footballing career under Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard heaped high praise on Kompany’s abilities and this reference was more than enough for Bayern to give him the job. The former City player is well-versed in the German language as he spent some time in Germany playing with the Hamburg team. This will give him the advantage of adapting to the conditions a lot quicker.
