In a historic achievement, the Men’s Wrestling Team of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University secured the team runner-up title at the South-West Zone wrestling tournament held at Chandigarh University Mohali. This outstanding performance not only brings glory to the university but also qualifies the team for the prestigious All India Inter University Wrestling Tournament.
Shubham Thorat exhibited excellence by clinching the gold medal in the 74 kg weight category, contributing significantly to the team’s success. Raviraj Nimbalkar’s commendable performance earned him a silver medal in the 86 kg weight category, while Saurabh Igwe secured a bronze medal in the 57 kg weight category. Ganesh Shete (70 kg) and Swapni Shelar (57 kg) have also qualified to represent the university in the upcoming All India Wrestling Tournament.
In addition to the men’s team triumph, six female athletes from the university’s Women’s Wrestling Team have qualified for the All India Wrestling Championship. Shrukhamla Ratnaparkhi secured a silver medal in the 65 kg weight category, and Vedik Sasane earned a bronze medal in the 76 kg weight category. The quartet of Shruti Bamnawat (57 kg), Sanjana Deisle (62 kg), Lakshmi Pawar (68 kg), and Kanchan Thorve (72 kg) will also participate in the prestigious All India Wrestling Tournament.
The dedicated coaching of Dr. Rameshwar Vidhate and guidance from Professor Mangesh Dongre played a pivotal role in the success of these athletes. Dr. Ashok Kamble and Lalita Pujari, serving as team manager, contributed tirelessly to the team’s achievements.
The university’s leadership, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Pramod Yewle, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shyam Shirasath, Registrar Prof. Dr. Bhagwan Sakhle, and Sports Director Dr. Sandeep Jagtap, extended their heartfelt congratulations to the accomplished players, recognizing their outstanding efforts on the wrestling mat.
