The suspension of the Indian Paralympic Committee Lifted

The Sports Ministry has taken an important decision to revoke the suspension of the Indian Paralympic Committee. The Sports Ministry has taken this decision after Paralympic medalist Devendra Jhajharia was elected as the President.

The Sports Ministry ordered the suspension of the PCI last month due to irregularities in the election process of the Paralympic Committee of India. The ministry said this was a violation of the Constitution and the Sports Code of the Indian Paralympic Committee.

The suspension was due to the delay in holding the election.

The Sports Ministry had pointed out that the PCI’s decision to hold elections on 28 March 2024 was in violation of its constitution and the Sports Code, which mandates holding elections at least one month before the end of office-bearers’ terms. According to government circulars and the sports code, failure to hold elections as stipulated in the constitution or non-compliance with government guidelines is grounds for suspension. The Ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining good governance and accountability standards in sports federations.

Cancellation of suspension

Revoking the suspension with immediate effect, the ministry said, “The election process has reached a stage where the nominees are deemed to have been duly elected unanimously.” The important fact is that the World Shooting Para Sport is hosting the World Cup. Hence it has been decided to withdraw the suspension of PCI with immediate effect.
