Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will feature as an ‘impact player’ for the team in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. However, Ponting also admitted that there has been no decision on captaincy and wicketkeeping.
Ponting confirmed that Pant is ready for IPL 2024. Ponting said, “Pant himself said he will play for the team. Ponting said that Pant’s wicketkeeping and captaincy are not certain, but he will definitely bat.”
Will Pant have the necessary impact as an impact player?
Given that Pant is coming back from injury, Ponting added that it won’t be fair to expect Pant to play all the matches, but the Australian is backing the young wicketkeeper to feature in at least 10 of the 14 matches.
“When I asked Pant, he said, I will play every match and also keep”, Ponting said. Regardless of whether Pant can keep wickets or not, Ponting said that he will be used as an impact player. The role is likely to suit the southpaw who is known for his swashbuckling style of play.
More importantly, if Pant is relieved of his captaincy duties for this season, Ponting confirmed that David Warner will lead the side. This will allow Pant to express himself and that makes him an even more dangerous batter.
