Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has drawn attention to the challenges faced by bowlers in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) due to flat pitches and the influence of additional batsmen in teams. Ganguly emphasized the need for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to address this imbalance and restore equilibrium between bat and ball in the tournament.
The pitches in this phase of the IPL have predominantly favoured batsmen, with teams consistently surpassing the 200-run mark. Speaking during the Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals match, Ganguly highlighted the difficulties encountered by bowlers, who are finding it tough to contain the scoring rate across various venues. He stressed the importance of rectifying this imbalance to ensure fair competition between bat and ball in future IPL editions.
To address this issue, the IPL governing body has implemented measures such as restricting bowlers to a maximum of two bouncers per over. However, Ganguly noted that some key players perceive this rule as exacerbating the disparity between batting and bowling prowess. Joining Ganguly in expressing concern for the bowlers, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has also echoed sentiments regarding the need for balance in the IPL dynamics.
