Brisbane Ready For The Novak Djokovic Circus

Novak Djokovic believes he can still win Grand Slams, starting with the Australian Open this week. The Serbian is aiming for an incredible 11th triumph and a record 25th major trophy. The Serbian superstar is now coached by Andy Murray. The 37-year-old is aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title after failing to add to his number during a dismal 2024, despite winning Olympic singles gold in Paris.

The ATP-WTA event runs from December 29 to January 5, with the Australian Open starting on January 12. If he wins, he will become only the third man in the Open era to win 100 titles, after Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). Novak Djokovic was defeated in the Australian Open semi-finals this year by eventual champion Jannik Sinner. His failure to win another major leaves him tied with Margaret Court.

They have a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles. In an attempt to outperform her in Melbourne, he has partnered with long-time adversary and now-retired Murray. The Brisbane tournament will also be the return to competitive tennis of Australian Nick Kyrgios, who has played just one ATP Tour singles match in two years after knee, foot, and wrist injuries.

Djokovic Cementing His Legacy

Following the retirements of Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray this year, none of the other so-called “Big Four” players will be on the other side of the net for the first time since Djokovic began playing at the age of 37.  Roger Federer called it quits in 2022. As they faded, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz stepped forward to become the new Grand Slam kings. Both men choose out of a warm-up competition before the year’s first major, which begins on January 12.

Doubts emerged regarding Djokovic’s ambition and ability to defeat the young guard following a poor 2024. Djokovic said, “I still will try to go strong because I feel like my body is serving me well. I still have the motivation to win Grand Slams and make more history. That’s one of the biggest reasons why I asked Andy to work with me, because I still have big plans, so as long as that’s the case, I will keep going.”
