Syndrela Das has a set routine. She arrives at the table tennis hall for her match, and afterward, she returns to her hotel and begins to study. In less than a month, she will sit for her Class 10 board exams. This week, however, her focus has been divided. Das, 15, is one of the youngest players playing at the 86th Senior National Championships, held at Surat’s Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium.
However, the girl from Kolkata is highly regarded as one of the players to watch out for in the next years. She has already begun to receive accolades, however. In November, she won the Under-15 girls singles category at the WTT Youth Contender event in Lugnano, Italy, adding a trophy to her already full suitcase of schoolbooks. Das is not the tallest player, but she’s athletic and quick on her feet.
She plays an attacking style of table tennis, with her backhand being a particularly sharp weapon. Surprisingly, she has been playing the sport for almost 12 years. She recalls that her parents used to drop her off at a neighbouring club in Kolkata where she would play with a pal on a little table. Table tennis quickly surpassed her previous interest, swimming, which she had to abandon.

She developed a skin reaction to chlorine in the pool. Syndrela does, however, enjoy taking a few brief dips in her own time. She won the Under-13 title in the WTT Youth Contender tournament in Lugnano in 2022, following another title in Slovenia, under the direction of coaches Soumyadeep Roy and Poulomi Ghatak, who train her at their academy. More recently, the junior world No.45 earned two silvers and a bronze medal.

Das, who has already won national titles at the Under-15, Under-17, and Under-19 levels, is competing in the Senior Nationals for the second time. The move to the senior division, however, is primarily about gaining exposure.
