Indian golfers Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar have officially secured their places at the upcoming Paris Olympics, based on their world rankings. Aditi, who notably finished fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Games, representing India’s best Olympic performance in golf, will be making her third Olympic appearance. Meanwhile, Diksha, who has previously competed in the Olympics, will be returning for her second Games. Joining them are Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjit Bhullar from the men’s division, completing India’s representation in the prestigious tournament scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
Selection for the Olympics is overseen by the Golf Association of India, relying on the Official World Golf Ranking criteria. The qualification process allocates spots to the top 60 male and 60 female players globally, with a cap of four golfers per country if within the top 15 rankings. Aditi currently holds the 24th position in the rankings, solidifying her place, while Diksha has secured her spot at 40th.
Diksha Dagar holds a unique distinction as the only golfer to have participated in both the Olympics and the Deaflympics, where she has achieved medal-winning success twice. Additionally, she made history as the second Indian woman to triumph on the Ladies European Tour, an accomplishment she achieved independently of Aditi, marking her entry into elite competitive circles at just 18 years old.
Looking ahead to Paris, Aditi and Diksha bring a blend of experience and ambition to the Indian contingent, aiming to build on their past achievements on the global stage. Their participation not only underscores their individual prowess but also reflects the growing prominence of Indian golf on the international scene. With their places secured through meritocratic ranking systems, both athletes are poised to make significant contributions to India’s medal prospects at the upcoming Olympic Games.
As Aditi and Diksha prepare to tee off in Paris, all eyes will be on these talented athletes to inspire and make their mark on yet another prestigious international platform.
