Supercopa De Espana Is A Money Making Scandal ft. El Clasico

The Spanish Supercup has been in the headlines over the last few days in football conversations and almost all Spanish media. And that is because two of the biggest clubs in Spain, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona had been playing in the competition. With El Clasico on the cards, every promoter, fan and professional associated with the sport of Football was highly invested in the Supercopa De Espana Final. While it surely was a treat for every football fan across the globe, there is a case to be made whether the competition itself is fair on other teams except the ones that play in El Clasico.

Saudi Move Acts In Favour Of El Clasico, Which In Turn Results In Money

In 2019, the Spanish Supercup was hosted for the first time in the country of Saudi Arabia. It was also the first time that the competition was made into a 4 team format. The Runners Up of the Copa Del Rey and the Runners Up in La Liga also started participating. This meant that 4 teams in total would play the Supercup.

But that was just the tip of the Iceberg. This change in format ensured that one way or the other, chances are that fans would get to watch an El Clasico fixture. This was because FC Barcelona and Real Madrid more often than not finish 1st and 2nd in La Liga. Also, many a time end up playing the Final of the Copa Del Rey. This means that one way or the other, both Spanish Giants are regulars in the Supercopa De Espana. Hence the chances of their being an El Clasico drastically increase.

What’s more is that whenever there is an El Clasico there is a hell of a lot more revenue that production houses, the Spanish League the RFEF etc can earn. The broadcasting channels have a treat every time a Clasico takes place.

Furthermore moving the Supercup to Saudi means that there are a lot less number of diegard fans of other teams to cheer them on. The Saudi Fanbase as a whole is split between FC Barcelona Fans and Real Madrid fans. So when other teams play the two Spanish Giants it’s almost like an away fixture for them, further favouring the Spanish Giants.

Just during the most recent Supercopa De Espana, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona were in the Final. Furthermore, both semifinalists who lost talked about the match feeling like an away game. It’s almost as if the tournament is made to make money and take away the natural fun of football.
