Three matches were cancelled due to heavy rain and wet fields in Florida, causing frustration for India’s legendary former captain Sunil Gavaskar, who has suggested that the ICC should avoid holding matches in such locations.
The matches affected were Sri Lanka-Nepal, USA-Ireland, and India-Canada, all cancelled due to inclement weather and wet grounds. The USA team benefited the most from this, gaining a point by forfeit and advancing to the Super 8 round—a historic achievement for the team. However, this outcome was detrimental to the Pakistan team, whose progression in the tournament hinged on the match results.
The India vs. Canada match was cancelled due to the wet ground rather than rain, which incensed Sunil Gavaskar. He stated, “The ICC should not organize matches in places with inadequate facilities to cover the entire ground. Covering just the pitch is insufficient if the rest of the ground gets soaked with rainwater.”
The heavy rains in Florida severely impacted the Pakistan team. Their fate in the T20 World Cup depended on the result of the USA vs. Ireland match. Had Ireland defeated the USA, Pakistan’s hopes in the tournament would have remained alive. However, the game was cancelled due to rain, dashing Pakistan’s dreams and ending their run in the competition.
