India’s foremost tennis talent, Sumit Nagal, continues his ascent up the global rankings, now standing proudly at the 80th position. Khar Gymkhana recently celebrated his remarkable achievements, where he was honoured for his stellar performance on the court.
In a ceremony graced by Khar Gymkhana President Vivek Devnani (fondly known as Pauly), General Secretary Sahib Singh Lamba, and Treasurer Vipul Verma, Sumit received accolades amidst a gathering of fellow members and aspiring tennis enthusiasts. Notably, Sumit’s affiliation with Khar Gymkhana dates back to his honorary membership, awarded last year in recognition of his exceptional tennis prowess.
Reflecting on his journey, Sumit fondly recalled his training sessions alongside Indian tennis icon Mahesh Bhupathi at Khar Gymkhana. Expressing gratitude for reaching the 80th spot in the global tennis rankings, Sumit shared his ambition to strive even harder, setting his sights on breaking into the top 50 this year. With a determined focus on the upcoming Wimbledon tournament, scheduled from July 1 to 14, Sumit remains dedicated to his rigorous training regimen.
The year 2024 has been marked by significant milestones for Sumit Nagal. Notably, his standout victory over world number 38 Matteo Amaldi at the Monte Carlo Masters tennis tournament showcased his exceptional talent, although he faced a tough defeat against 20th seed H. Rune. Additionally, Sumit’s qualification for the French Open underscores his growing presence on the international tennis stage.
Sumit’s journey to success began with a remarkable win alongside his partner Lee Hoang Nam at the 2015 Wimbledon tennis tournament, clinching the men’s doubles title. Since then, he has emerged as a key player in India’s Davis Cup tennis team. Despite encountering setbacks, including injuries, along the way, Sumit’s resilience and determination have remained unwavering, propelling him to new heights with each challenge he encounters.
