India’s star tennis player Sumit Nagal has been handed a tough draw in the third Grand Slam of the year at Wimbledon.
Sumit Nagal is competing in the men’s singles main draw of the tournament for the first time. In the first round, Nagal will face Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović. Currently ranked 72nd in the world, Nagal faces a challenging path, as world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy is also in his draw and could be his opponent in the third round.
Clearing the first round will not be easy for Nagal, as he is up against a player ranked 20 places higher. Kecmanović previously defeated Nagal four years ago in Cologne, Germany. If Nagal manages to advance past the first round, he could face the winner of the match between Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta and the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor. Nagal, who qualified for the Paris Olympics, previously lost to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in the men’s singles first-round qualifier in 2018.
Nagal entered the main draw of this year’s Australian Open by defeating 31st seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the first round. After winning the Chennai Open ATP Challenger, he broke into the top 100 rankings. India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden will face France’s Adrian Mannarino and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in men’s doubles. Bopanna and Ebden reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year.
