The English media is ripping Gareth Southgate to shreds, labeling him a fraud who doesn’t deserve to coach England. People across the country are demanding his resignation after a poor performance against Denmark. The three lions drew 1-1 with the Danes, but the overall performance was extremely poor. Southgate’s conservative playstyle and his lack of improvisation were the point of difference for many fans and pundits across the footballing world. Pretty much everybody in England wants Southgate’s head on a pike right now. This is an extreme overreaction. Everyone needs to calm down and relax. Before Southgate, England were absolutely abysmal. England had been humiliated in France by Euro debutants by Iceland. Their golden generation had gone to the gallows. Their football was as depressing as the English weather and their team was full of premier league rejects. Since Southgate took over, he has exceeded his own expectations. This is the man who took England to a World Cup Semi-Final. People may criticise his conservative tactics although this exact playstyle took England to the Euros final in 2021. Southgate’s mantra has proven successful in knockout tournaments and why would he change it now?
Do or Die For England
England are expected to win their group. They play their final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday and a victory would seal the top spot. Criticism for the English manager is at an all-time high. The team has to make sure the media pressure doesn’t get to them. Southgate and his staff will be looking to go all the way this year. He has said, that if England does not win, this may be his final tournament as the boss. It is a do-or-die situation. Southgate must win the Euros or lose his job.
