After an illustrious 11-year international cricket career, former South Africa captain Dean Elgar has revealed his decision to retire following the two-match Test series against India. Elgar, known for his left-handed batting prowess, will bid farewell to the game after the Indian home series, with his final appearance scheduled for the iconic Newlands ground.
The 36-year-old expressed gratitude in a heartfelt statement, acknowledging the privilege of representing his country for over a decade. Elgar’s decision marks the end of an era, with his last Test to be played at Cape Town, a venue he considers his favorite, where he not only scored his maiden Test run but intends to conclude his remarkable journey.
Debuting in Tests and ODIs in 2012, Elgar found his true calling in the longest format. With 5146 runs in 84 Tests, including 13 centuries and 23 fifties, he leaves behind a legacy of stellar performances. Notable highlights include a memorable 199 against Bangladesh in 2017 and a resilient 160 against India in Visakhapatnam in 2019.
Elgar’s leadership stint saw South Africa finishing third in the ICC World Test Championship in the 2021-23 cycle, marked by series victories against India and West Indies at home and a drawn series in New Zealand.
While Elgar’s retirement is met with appreciation, some argue that the timing might impact South Africa’s stability, leaving them in search of a new captain.
