The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 has come to an end. The major tournament saw some breathtaking matches and some serious upsets. New Zealand out of nowhere won their maiden T20 World Cup title. On Sunday, the Kiwis defeated South Africa in the final of the tournament. Nobody believed them to be the winners before the start of the major tournament with the form they came in the competition.
However, beating all the odds they have won the silverware. This is the second time that New Zealand’s women have won a major ICC Women’s tournament. The last time they won was the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2000 on home soil. The White Ferns were competing in the third final. But their first since 2010, and put in a superb performance on the weekend.
South Africa Women lost their second final in a row. In the 2023 edition they lost on their home soil against Australia. This year they played really good cricket to yet again qualify for the final, but failed to get over the finishing line once again. This has been a problem for the Proteas since they started playing the game. Not only for the Women’s team but the Men’s team as well.
South Africa’s chokers tag remains intact
Can South Africa Cricket Ever Break Free from Failing at the Finish Line? At one point of time they surely will. Previously in the men’s tournament they never used to get past the semi-final line. However, in the 2024 edition they qualified for the final for the very first time and lost to India in the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA. The semi-final choking time was seen off by the Proteas.
The Women’s side have also put up some brilliant performances in recent years. They defeated Australia in the semi-final before qualifying for the final of the competition. This has been a heartbreaking moment for Laura Wolvaardt’s side who did everything except crossing the finish line. However, from here they will learn and take on the challenges for the upcoming major events.
