Delhi Capitals have removed Ricky Ponting from the head coach position. The former Australian World Cup winner has left the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise after 7 seven years. Ponting during his seven-year tenure, the franchise was unable to win the IPL title even once. However, the side played amazingly in these years qualifying for the final once and for the playoffs as well.
However, due to the lack of silverware, the management has decided to discontinue with the former IPL winner. Sourav Ganguly will be announced as the next head coach for the side. The former India captain is currently the Director of Cricket for the franchise.
He has become the front-runner for the job ahead of the next auction. The next year will be very crucial for the franchise. This year it will be the mega auction for the teams. With only four players to be retained, some will be bought back with the Right to Match card.
India vs Australia ego continues in IPL franchise
Sourav Ganguly has taken a dig at the inefficiency of Ponting in the years he has been related to the franchise. But during his stint, he fosters a new team environment, helping young talents such as Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant grow. But a piece of trophy was missing from his cabinet.
The Southpaw will be looking to make changes in the squad bring in some fresh cricketers, and think of a long-term project to win the IPL in next forthcoming years. The DC co-owners, JSW, and the GMR group plan to meet at the end of this month or early next month to discuss the next steps.
With only one foreign slot available, DC will have to choose between Australia’s Jake-Fraser McGurk and South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs. The retention choices for the Indian core are rather easy. With skipper Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Axar Patel, and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav will be retained. The eyes will be in the auction with the kind of players they bring in which can suit their style of cricket and the grounds as well.
