Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role in helping Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win the IPL, but he has chosen to remain silent about his omission from the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup.
Shreyas explained his exclusion from the team, attributing it to a lack of communication and certain unfavourable decisions following last year’s ODI World Cup. He stated that these factors prevented him from securing a T20 World Cup squad spot.
Dropped from Central Contract The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also dropped Shreyas Iyer and wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan from the central contract. This decision was made due to their preference for the IPL over domestic cricket. Despite being in excellent form during the ODI World Cup last year, where Shreyas scored 530 runs with two centuries and five fifties at an average of 66.25, he was not included in the central contract. He was the third-highest run-scorer for India in that tournament.
Lack of Communication In a video released on his YouTube channel, Shreyas Iyer said, “I performed well in the World Cup and wanted to rest for a few days afterwards. Some decisions did not go my way due to a lack of communication. But ultimately, my performance with the bat is what counts. I decided that winning the Ranji Trophy and the IPL would be a strong response to what happened in the past, and thankfully, everything worked out in my favour.”
Shreyas was not included in the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies. Although KKR won the IPL title, Shreyas’ batting performance was inconsistent. While he excelled in the knockout stages, his slow batting in the early part of the IPL season drew criticism.
