Sector 36: How Much Gore Is Too Much Gore For India?

Vikrant Massey starring in the Bollywood Gore Thriller, “Sector 36” has garnered mixed reviews from everyone. It gives rise to a very interesting question, that being, “How Much Gore Is Too Much Gore?” For a country like India, where Bollywood has always been “soft” compared to other film industries, does a Cannibalism-centric movie involving p*dophilia and s*xual abuse to the maximum, like Sector 36 cross the limit for Indian viewers?

The director, Aditya Nimbalkar, has given us a perspective on how the cultural shift in Indian movies is taking shape. Up until a few years back, Kabir Singh, in 2019 was met with huge criticism for all the violence and misogyny in it. Now, 5 years down the line Sector 36 has been applauded by many for its bold sequences and storyline.

Based in Old Delhi, the film focuses on the story of a serial killer who has had personal trauma in the past with his Maternal Uncle who used to abuse him sexually. And like every movie where the Antagonist is the lead, his unresolved demons of the past influence his wrongdoings in the movie. A human-turned-monster, Prem Singh, played by Massey, kidnaps kids from the neighboring Sector 36 area of Old Delhi and used to r*ape and devour their meat.

Wow, that’s some gore for you. The deeper plot of the film though, revolves around Inspector Ram Charan Pandey, the investigating officer of all the missing person cases in Sector 36, played by Deepak Dobriyal. It tackles the herd mentality of “It’s not our problem until it’s upon us”. I believe bold genres like Gore’s should have a relative reason behind their importance in driving the point of the film home.

And from that perspective, Sector 36 fails its audience. But other than that the gore displayed throughout the film, coupled with Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal’s sheer ability to perfect their characters to make them seem like real-life humans win double points for the movie.

All in all, Sector 36 is the perfect film for Indian OTT. It offers the viewing experience every Bollywood lover wants from an OTT platform film. There is no doubt that Sector 36’s Netflix viewership will be much more in proportion than how it has performed in theatres. Do you feel Sector 36 is too gore for India?
