In a dazzling kick-off to the 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships, Asian Championships 2021 gold medalist Sanjeet (92kg) and three-time National Champion Varinder Singh (60kg) showcased their prowess with resounding victories on day one.
Sanjeet, representing SSCB, left spectators in awe as he swiftly dismantled Karnataka’s Jagadheeshwaran J in the first round. A barrage of aggressive moves and powerful punches forced a referee stoppage, declaring Sanjeet the winner. His next challenge awaits in the form of Chandigarh’s Sawan Gill in the round of 16.
Varinder, donning the colors of RSPB (Railway Sports Promotion Board), tactfully navigated his bout against Amlesh Kumar of Bihar. After a cautious start, Varinder unleashed a series of counter-attacks, securing a comfortable 5-0 victory. He gears up to face Maharashtra’s Vishal Nupe in the round of 32.
Rajasthan’s Harsh Choudhary (80kg), a participant in the 2023 Men’s World Championships, exhibited dominance against Shivam Saini of Uttar Pradesh, clinching a unanimous 5-0 decision win. Harsh sets the stage for a round of 16 clash with Chander Dev Singh of Jammu & Kashmir.
Jashanpreet Singh (71kg) from Punjab left no room for doubt, registering a commanding victory with a knockout (KO) in the second round against Gujarat’s Mohammad Moin Shikh.
The anticipation builds for six-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) and World Championships silver medalist Amit Panghal (51kg), set to enter the ring in the upcoming rounds.
With over 350 boxers competing across 13 weight categories, the championships promise intense bouts and remarkable displays of skill, making it a must-watch for boxing enthusiasts.
