Nepal’s cricket sensation, Sandeep Lamichhane, faces a major setback as he has been convicted in a rape case and subsequently sentenced to eight years in prison. The verdict was delivered by the bench of Shishar Raj Dhakal on Wednesday, marking a dark turn in Lamichhane’s career.
The allegations against Lamichhane emerged when a minor girl accused him of rape in December of the previous year. This incident led to his arrest in October 2022, as he was accused of assaulting the minor in a hotel in Kathmandu. Despite initial legal challenges, Lamichhane was granted bail by the Patan High Court in August the following year, allowing him temporary freedom.
Sandeep Lamichhane, renowned for being the first Nepalese cricketer to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Delhi Capitals in 2018, had gained widespread recognition and popularity. However, the recent conviction has cast a shadow over his illustrious career.
It’s disheartening to witness the fall of a cricket star but at the same time it is very pleasing to see that justice was served. It gives people hope that no matter who you are or what position you hold, you can’t defy the laws especially by committing such horrific crimes and getting away with it.
