Maharashtra’s Sachin Khilari has created a new history by winning a silver medal in the shot put event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Sachin threw the ball 16.32 meters and achieved silver success. Sachin missed the gold medal by just 0.06 meters. He started practicing at the ground of Azam Sports Academy in Pune.
Sachin Khilari won the silver medal to take India’s medal tally to 21. India opened the medal account in the men’s F46 shot put event. He won the silver medal with a throw of 16.32 meters. Sachin threw 16.32 meters in his second attempt. However, he could not throw better after that. Canada’s Greg Stewart won the gold medal with a throw of 16.38m. India’s Mohammad Yasar finished eighth and Rohit Kumar ninth in the same competition.
In the shot put final, Sachin’s first attempt was 14.72m, second attempt 16.32m, third attempt 16.15m, fourth attempt 16.31m, fifth attempt 16.03m and sixth (last) attempt 15.95m. Sachin also set a field record by throwing the ball 16.32 meters. This was India’s 21st medal at the Paris Paralympics. Sachin had won the gold medal in the men’s shot put F46 event at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships. He also featured in the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships. Sachin had won the gold medal there.
Sachin Khilari defies every odds in Paralympics
Mohammad Yasar’s best effort was 14.21m and Rohit’s best was 14.10m. The F46 category in para-athletics events is for people with mild to moderate movement of one or both arms or missing limbs. These players have to throw using their hips and legs. Sachin, a resident of the Sangli district of Maharashtra, met with an accident during his school life. As a result, his elbow muscles failed.
Despite several surgeries, he could not recover. It has not been easy for Sachin to reach this position. He too has had to struggle a lot. Sachin hails from Sangli and has been practicing at the Azam Sports Academy ground in Pune for the past 4 years. The organization had constructed a special shed for Sachin so that rain would not disturb Sachin’s practice.
The result is that today Sachin has won a silver medal in the Paralympic competition. Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society President Dr. PA Inamdar, Vice President Abeda Inamdar, Society Secretary Irfan Shaikh, Azam Sports Academy Director, and Guide Dr Gulzar Shaikh have specially congratulated Sachin Khilari for this great achievement.
