Sachin Khilari added to India’s tally at the World Para Athletics Championship as he won a gold medal in the Men’s Shot Put F46 category. His throw of 16.30 metres helped him better his own Asian record of 16.21 metres, which he recorded to win the gold medal at the World Athletic Championships in Paris last year. He is considered to be a medal prospect for India in the upcoming Paralympic campaign.
With Sachin Khilari winning the gold, India has now recorded their best-ever medal tally at the World Championships. He joined Sumit Antil, Mariyappan Thangavelu and Ekta Bhyan as Indians to have won gold medals at the event in Japan. Khilari came into the competition high on confidence as he had a stellar run last year at the World Athletic Championships.
Speaking to PTI after his win, Sachin Khilari said, “I was expecting the gold here and I am happy. I have also qualified for Paris Olympics and hope to win gold there also.”
Sumit Antil strikes gold again at the World Para Athletic Championship
The world record holder in the men’s F64 javelin throw event – Sumit Antil added another World Para Athletic Championship gold to his name. He threw the javelin at a distance of 69.50 metres to once again establish his dominance in the event.
Sumit set the world record with a throw of 73.29 metres at the Asian Para Games last year. He has been a consistent performer and will look to win another gold medal for India at the Paralympic in Paris.
Antil dominated the event in the Tokyo Paralympic campaign as he broke the world record set by himself three times in six throws to win the gold. He has said in the past that he would like to breach the 80-metre mark once in his career, which would be a great achievement not only for him but also for the whole Para-Sports community.
