Ronald Araujo deserves all the criticism. He cost Barcelona the game and single-handedly lost them the game. Last Night, Barcelona faced off against PSG in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League. The Blaugrana had a 3-2 lead on aggregate after their away win in the first leg. An early goal from Raphinha put the Claret and Blue two goals up. Barca fans began dreaming. They had been parched of European success and it looked like they would finally taste some glory. That is when Ronald Araujo stupidly got himself sent off and ruined everything.
Self Sabotage
In the 29th minute, Araujo brought Bradley Barcola down outside the box. The referee showed no hesitation in bringing out the red card. The Barcelona faithful were fuming with Xavi complaining vehemently. However, it was a very fair decision. Araujo’s dumb decision to foul Barcola rather than risk the one-on-one cost Barcelona. The red card changed the entire game. Young Lamine Yamal, Barca’s best player was subbed off for defensive solitude. Despite the defensive substitutions, the home side was ripped apart as PSG came back and scored 4 goals to turn the tie on its head. All because of one red card.
Red Ruin
A player of Ronald Araujo’s caliber should have done better in that situation. He is considered one of the best in the business and mistakes like these are extremely disappointing. His red card was like a hangover that set in across the second leg and hurt the Blaugrana. His rash red card resulted in his team crashing out of the Champions League and he has nobody to blame, but himself. It shows how much a red card can affect a match
Specialists in Failure
Barcelona have once again choked in the Champions League. They have sabotaged themselves and disappointed everyone. Their fanbase may blame the referee today but when the emotions tone down and clarity sets in, they’ll realize that all the decisions were fair. Barcelona needs a serious shift. With Xavi leaving at the end, the club will start again from scratch.
