Rohit Sharma Shares His Thoughts on the Impact Player Rule

After the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, Indian team captain Rohit Sharma has said that he is not a fan of the ‘Impact Player’ rule implemented in the IPL tournament. Rohit said that this rule has created a big hurdle in the process of becoming an all-round cricketer.

Speaking to the Club Prairie podcast, Indian team captain Rohit Sharma expressed concern about the impact of the ‘impact player’ rule. Rohit Sharma said that only 11 players play on the field, not 12. All-rounders are falling behind due to impact players.’
Rohit’s opinion is also supported by Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan. Rohit said ‘I am not a big fan of the rule of impact players. You are taking too much out of the game to make it a bit of entertainment for people. But if you really look at just the cricket aspect…players like Washington Sundar, and Shivam Dubey are not bowling. This is not good for the Indian team.

The upcoming T20 World Cup cricket tournament is just around the corner. In this background, this statement of Rohit Sharma is very important. In 2007, the Indian team won the T20 World Cup. After that, India could not win the T20 World Cup. Achieving balance in the team is a big challenge. Because the leading batsman does not bowl at all. Hardik Pandya is a fast bowler all-rounder while Ravindra Jadeja is a spinner all-rounder.

Shivam Dubey has scored 124 runs at a strike rate of 158.97 in the IPL tournament. Also, he has taken two wickets. Shivam Dubey has played his role well as a batsman for the CSK team. But, the impact of the player’s decision has made his bowling service zero. Also, Washington Sundar has bowled very little in six matches while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Shivam Dubey can take good notice of the spinners. However, he may suffer from not bowling. This rule can have a significant impact on team selection.

Rohit Sharma said, ‘I don’t know what you can do about it. But, I am not a fan of this rule. You have to select 12 players. Who will be the impact player, you can see how the game is going and change it depending on what you need, what the pitch is.’
