Pujara’s Resurgence: 17th Double Century Sparks Comeback Talks for Team India Selection

Cheteshwar Pujara’s stunning 243-run knock in Ranji Trophy reignites Team India prospects, challenging selectors for a comeback.

In a remarkable start to the Ranji Trophy 2024 season, Cheteshwar Pujara, representing Saurashtra, crafted his 17th double century against Jharkhand, making a bold statement after being omitted from Team India. The seasoned batsman’s exceptional innings not only propelled Saurashtra to a commanding position with a 435-run lead but also pushed him past VVS Laxman in the list of highest Indian run-scorers in first-class cricket.

With the upcoming 5-match home Test series against England, Pujara’s prolific form raises speculation about a potential return to the national squad. The selectors may find it hard to ignore him if he maintains this level of performance.

Pujara’s unbeaten 243 off 356 balls, adorned with 30 fours, showcased his resilience and determination. Saurashtra declared at 547 for 4 in the first innings, leaving Jharkhand trailing significantly after being bowled out for 142 runs.

Surpassing VVS Laxman’s record, Pujara now stands as the fourth-highest Indian run-scorer in first-class cricket, amassing 19,731 runs. Sunil Gavaskar leads the chart, followed by Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

In comparison to legendary Don Bradman’s 37 double centuries in first-class cricket, Pujara, now with 17, shares the joint fourth position with England’s Herbert Sutcliffe and Mark Ramprakash.

While Pujara’s comeback is celebrated, some argue that younger talent should be given precedence over experienced players for Team India’s long-term vision.
