Prithvi Shaw is one of the cricketing talents who are yet to utilise his full potential. Coming out of the famous 2018 U19 batch of Indian Cricket, the Mumbai-born batter was the skipper of the team that won the U19 World Cup. Due to his strokeplay and attacking cricket, he was called the next Sachin Tendulkar. However, over time, his consistency vanished. This led to his drop from the senior men’s side.
Despite scoring a century on his debut in the test format, he could not carry forward the same form and after some poor innings, he was out of the team. His fitness has always been a question being a bulky cricketer, he has often been criticised for the same. The explosive opener has been excluded from the Mumbai squad for their upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura.
Prithvi Shaw has been urged to improve his fitness, and the decision to drop him is a subtle reminder to the 24-year-old to address his disciplinary concerns. Shaw missed Mumbai’s conditioning camp in Bengaluru in July, as well as the Buchi Babu Trophy in Chennai. This showcases that fitness has been one of his main concerns and in India even in the domestic format fitness is given importance.
Prithvi Shaw is a burden to Indian Cricket
Will Prithvi Shaw ever make a comeback in the Indian national team? The Mumbai selectors and team management felt Shaw was overweight. They are also upset with him since he does not take net practice sessions seriously. Prithvi Shaw has reportedly skipped sessions. According to Cricbuzz, Rahane and head coach Omkar Salvi agreed with the selectors’ decision to dismiss Shaw.
Shaw’s career has suffered as a result of issues about his lack of discipline and fitness. Shaw has also been involved in some off-field incidents. Including a fight in a nightclub in February 2023, which resulted in him being followed and eventually manhandled. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended Shaw for a few months in 2019 due to a doping violation.
