Mohamed Salah marked his return to the Liverpool playing XI with a goal and an assist as the Reds thrashed Brentford 4-1 on Saturday.
Darwin Nunez gave Liverpool the lead after being played through on goal by Diogo Jota in the 35th minute. Salah then came on as a substitute before halftime and made an instant impact by setting up Alexis McAllister for the Reds’ second goal. Salah later got on the scoresheet to add Liverpool’s third in the 68th minute.
Though Ivan Toney pulled a goal back for Brentford in the 75th minute, Coady Gakpo completed the rout for Liverpool by adding a fourth goal in the 86th minute. The result solidified Liverpool’s place at the top of the Premier League table.
Meanwhile, Arsenal thrashed Burnely 5-0 to keep the pressure on Liverpool at the summit. Bukayo Saka was the double for the Gunners who have now won their last six games in the league and scored five or more goals in three of them.
In the late game on Saturday, Chelsea held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw. Raheem Sterling scored against his former club to give Chelsea the lead in the first half. And the Blues had several chances to double their advantage but they were wasteful in front of goal. Eventually, they paid the ultimate price for their woeful finishing as Rodri scored a late equaliser to split the points.
The result has opened up a four-point gap between Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League table.
