Praveen Kumar breaks barriers with historic Asian record

India has performed exceptionally in the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024. The nation has won 27 medals so far in the multinational event. They won 6 golds, 9 silver and 12 bronze. It has been India’s best performance in Paralympics history. Previously they won 19 medals in the Tokyo event. However, Paris has been their best. This is the most gold medal they have won so far in the event’s history. 

Amidst this India’s Praveen Kumar has created a new history by winning the gold medal in the high jump event at the Paris Paralympic Games. This was India’s sixth gold medal in this tournament. That was the 26th medal in this event. In the men’s high jump T64 event, Praveen registered a historic performance by clearing 2.08 meters to win the gold medal. Praveen Kumar also set a new Asian record while winning the gold medal. After this, he became the third Indian high jumper to win a medal in Paris. 

Praveen Kumar is already a legend for India

Following Sharad Kumar, who took silver, and Mariyappan Thangavelu, who earned bronze in the men’s high jump T63 event. India’s javelin thrower Dipesh Kumar finished last in the men’s javelin F54 event. In the final round, Dipesh Kumar threw the javelin 26.11 meters in his first attempt. Ivan Revenko won the gold medal in this event. 

Praveen‘s achievements go beyond the Paralympics. He won silver in the 2019 World Para Athletics Junior Championship in Nottwil, Switzerland, and gold at the 2021 World Para Athletics FAZZA Grand Prix in Dubai, where he broke the Asian record. He recently won a bronze medal at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championship.
