Parveen Hooda Suspended for 22 Months, India Loses Olympic Quota

Bronze medal-winning boxer Parveen Hooda has been handed a 22-month suspension. Parveen, who clinched a bronze medal in the 57kg category at the Asian Games and secured an Olympic quota for Paris, has now left India without this coveted spot following her suspension.

Parveen’s suspension comes after she failed to provide accurate information to the International Testing Agency on three occasions within 12 months. As a result, her suspension will last until July 16, 2025.

This decision also impacts India’s medal tally at the 2023 Asian Games, reducing the total from 107 to 106. Despite this adjustment, India’s overall position remains unaffected, retaining fourth place in the medal standings. However, Indian boxing faces the significant setback of losing the women’s 57kg Olympic quota.

Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Jasmine Lamboria will now step up to compete in the final Olympic qualifier, beginning Friday in Bangkok. In boxing, Olympic quotas are awarded to countries rather than individual athletes, meaning India will have another chance to reclaim the quota through Lamboria’s performance.
