Over-expectation leading downfall of Sumit Nagal

Sumit Nagal has been eliminated from Wimbledon 2024. He lost in the first round of the men’s singles and doubles tournament. Nagal, who was playing against Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia. Lost 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 in 2 hours and 48 minutes at the SW19. In the mixed doubles, he was with Dusan Lajovic on Wednesday, lost in straight sets to Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar of Spain. They lost 6-2, 6-2 despite showing some fight in the first set of the match.

The 26-year-old was featuring in Wimbledon for the first time. The player expressed his difficulty due to his unfamiliarity with the grass court. He qualified for the Paris Olympics last month, displaying flashes of brilliance but paying the price for inconsistency in the first round on his weakest surface. The No.1 ranked Indian player has been struggling with consistency in the big tournaments. 

After qualifying for winning his first-round game against Alexander Bublik at the Australian Open, in straight sets, becoming the first Indian tennis player to upset a seeded player in the singles main draw of a Grand Slam since Ramesh Krishnan. After that, he lost in the second round against wildcard Shang Juncheng.

Is glory the reason for Nagal’s poor performance?

Sumit Nagal after winning the first round in the Australian Open gained lots of limelight and the expectations from the fans also went high. But he failed to perform as per the hype created by the Indian fans, thus resulting in the loss in the crucial games. His performances were affected due to the over-glory and the over-expectations of the fans. 

Despite arranging for a sustenance budget of Rs 1 crore that keeps him going on the ATP Tour. He has not been able to provide a sufficient amount for the training facilities outside the country and in India the high-quality training facilities are also very rare to be found. The 26-year-old has been training at the Nansel Tennis Academy in Germany for a few years, but as they are more expensive he might not be able to bear them, and is in such a condition that he may not be able to train at his favorite place.
