Nisha Dahiya’s injury dashes hopes; embarrassing for the rising star

India has so far won three medals in the Paris Olympics 2024. The nation has won three bronze medals in the shooting category. In the other events, they have failed to perform under pressure. In some games, despite taking the lead the athletes have to go down against their opponents. On Monday something similar happened not once but twice. First Lakshya Sen missed out on the bronze.

Then Wrestler Nisha Dahiya was left extremely disappointed in wrestling, losing to North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum in the quarters. She was leading 8-1 in the game before the injury. The Wrestler was in tears and writhing in pain, clutching her arm. She was immediately taken to the doctors, who diagnosed finger damage on her right hand. Before the action could resume, two of her fingers were taped together.

However as the game resumed she failed to keep up the momentum with being injured and lost the game 10-8, from 8-1. She was going to the semi-finals untill the incident happened that cost the nation a medal in wrestling. She was immediately rushed to a medical facility inside the Games Village for the scan. The unfortunate injury did shatter Nisha’s dream in Paris.

Virender Dahiya believes Nisha was injured intentionally

Was Nisha intentionally injured by North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum? Virender Dahiya, the coach of the Indian national team, believed it was “intentional” conduct on the part of the North Korean wrestler. These were the tactics they used against the Indian wrestler to take her out of the competition.

Virender said, “The way Nisha had started, the medal was in her neck and it has been taken away. The attacks were clear, the counter-attack worked and the defence was compact. She had beaten the same wrestler at the Asian Qualifier, there was no way Nisha was losing this.”

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) later announced that Nisha suffered a shoulder injury, and her treatment will be determined after additional testing. The 25-year-old will be back stronger in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and win a medal for the nation.
