Nethra Kumanan, India’s promising sailor, concluded her campaign at the Paris Olympics by finishing 21st in the individual dinghy event after the ninth qualifying race. This result means Kumanan is no longer in contention for a medal.
The qualifying phase of the sailing event comprises a total of 10 races, which determine the participants for the medal races. However, the 10th race was cancelled due to inclement weather. As per the competition rules, only the top 10 sailors based on their cumulative times from the qualifying races advance to the medal round. Nethra, despite her efforts, secured the 21st position overall.
In the ninth qualifying race, Nethra delivered a commendable performance, securing the 10th spot out of 43 competitors. This result helped her improve her overall ranking by three places, landing her in the 21st position. This Olympics was Nethra’s second appearance, and she showcased her potential and determination throughout the event. Her standout performance came in the first qualifying race, where she finished in sixth place. Unfortunately, her journey also had its low points, with her worst performance being a 31st-place finish in the eighth race.
Nethra Kumanan has been a trailblazer in Indian sailing, making significant strides on the international stage. Born in Chennai, she began her sailing career at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of India’s top sailors. Her journey to the Olympics has been marked by rigorous training and numerous national and international competitions. She has consistently demonstrated her skills and resilience, earning accolades and inspiring a new generation of sailors in India.
In the men’s category, India’s Vishnu Saravanan also faced challenges, finishing 18th with 114 net points, largely due to unfavourable weather conditions that impacted his performance.
Despite not securing a medal, both Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan’s participation in the Paris Olympics has been a testament to their dedication and the growing presence of Indian sailors on the global stage.
