Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 after being 100gm overweight. The Indian star wrestler was disqualified before the final. She suffered a major setback before the final match on Wednesday. She has been disqualified from the women’s 50 kg category. Irrespective of cutting her hair, cycling, skipping, and blood drawn she overweighed before the final.
The news has been a shocker for the nation. The organisers later announced that Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to the Indians in the semifinals, would replace her in the gold medal match. After that, the head of United World Wrestling, Nenad Lalovic reacted to the controversy.
Nenad Lalovic believes rules should be equal
Speaking to India Today, Nenad Lalovic said, “This is disappointing. We must respect the rules. I am so sorry for what happened to her. She was very underweight. But rules are rules and everything is public. All the players are there and one should be included in the competition. It is impossible to do what is not suitable for weight.”
He further said, “We should be more strict on that because we have a problem that you are living in this moment. The wrestlers are losing too much weight and it’s not good for their health. Many have seen their interest at the moment but they don’t see what happens in 20-30 years. We want athletes to compete in their natural weight. That’s the idea. This is when they make the best performances. Unfortunately, it’s a second case here. We had an Italian wrestler the previous day who didn’t make the weight and she didn’t compete.”
