After the recently concluded Mega Auction for IPL 2025, all franchises have a new look squad mostly set for the next 3 years. Many fans, pundits and cricket lovers have reached the conclusion that Mumbai Indians have one of the if not the best squads out of all the other teams. But this might not be true upon closer inspection.
Yes they have some big-name players and they probably have the best pace attack and top 5 batting lineup at their disposal, but they have some big gaping holes and what-ifs at their disposal as well.
A Top 5 With No Backups For Mumbai Indians And An Incomplete Bowling Attack
Yes, they probably have the best top 5 in the IPL consisting of Rohit Sharma, Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya. But apart from these 5, they do not have a saving grace. What happens when these 5 fail to fire? And to be completely honest, Rohit Sharma does not have a good track record in the IPL, especially in recent years. Naman Dhir, Robin Minz and Ryan Rickleton will most likely be tasked with filling in the gaps between the batting order. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner is good with the ball, but not quite the pinch-hitting number 7 or 8 you would want in your IPL side.
Now moving on to their bowling. Hardik Pandya, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and Jasprit Bumrah make up a wonderful pace quartet. They do not have reliability in their spinners. In their spin department, they have Karn Sharma, Santner, and Allah Ghazanfar. While Santner is a quality pick, finding him a place in the playing XI might become difficult as it would mean sacrificing a quality batter. Allah is not very well tested in difficult situations and Karn Sharma is handy but not that handy.
Then it also feels like even with Bumrah in the attack, Mumbai Indians do not have someone to keep up the pressure in death overs from the other end. So while they certainly have the quality in most players, Mumbai Indians suffer from a lack of water carriers.
