Mitchell Marsh is well on his way to recovery, targeting his fitness for Australia’s inaugural match in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Oman on June 5, despite facing a slight setback in his rehabilitation timeline.
The dynamic all-rounder suffered a hamstring injury during his stint with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, necessitating his return home for rehabilitation after withdrawing from the tournament.
While the Australian World Cup squad members not participating in the IPL have commenced their preparations at the National Cricket Centre, Marsh has been spotted honing his batting skills in the nets.
Coach Andrew McDonald expressed satisfaction at Marsh’s progress but noted a slight delay in his recovery. “He’s progressing well, albeit a bit slower than anticipated,” McDonald remarked. “But with ample time ahead, now that he’s ruled out of the IPL, we’re confident he’ll be ready.”
Marsh is expected to resume bowling activities a week before the team departs for the tournament, allowing him to gradually increase his workload during the event. McDonald emphasized strategic planning to optimize Marsh’s contributions, leveraging the squad’s all-around depth.
While Marsh remains a vital asset, Australia boasts alternative leadership options if needed. With seasoned campaigners like Pat Cummins, Matthew Wade, Nathan Ellis, Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, and Adam Zampa in the squad, there’s a wealth of leadership experience to draw upon.
Australia finds itself in Group B of the T20 World Cup, facing off against traditional rivals England, alongside Namibia, Oman, and Scotland. Their schedule includes matches against Oman and England in Barbados, followed by encounters with Namibia in Antigua and Scotland in St Lucia on June 12 and 16, respectively.
