Emphasizing the integral role of sports in personal development, Mahatma Gandhi Mission University Vice-Chancellor Dr Vilas Sapkal highlighted the importance of sportsmanship for achieving success in life. Speaking at a special program celebrating International Olympic Day at the university, Dr Sapkal underscored that sports contribute significantly to overall growth and personality development, urging all students to actively engage in sports. “Sports are a part of our life and our overall development takes place through sports. Especially through sports our personality develops”, he said.
The event, held at Chintangah and organized by the university’s sports department, was marked by enthusiastic participation. Dr Sapkal, addressing the attendees, noted the special emphasis placed on sports in the national education policy and announced the university’s initiative to award academic credits to students excelling in their favourite sports.
Highlighting the university’s commitment to sports, Dr Sapkal said, “Sports have been given special importance in the national education policy and now we have given credit to the players after playing their favourite sports. Every year we organize the All India Inter University Competition on behalf of Mahatma Gandhi Mission University and the Association of Indian Universities.” The university has successfully hosted events in soft tennis, cycling, and fencing, providing students with opportunities to compete at the national level.
Dr. Ashish Gadekar, the university registrar, reciprocated Dr. Sapkal’s sentiments, emphasizing that it is necessary to dream of the Olympics. Dr Gadekar expressed, “MGM University has provided world-class sports facilities to the students. The performance of our students in the ‘Khelo India’ competition is definitely commendable and I believe that our students will make a name for themselves at the international level in the coming years. Today we are celebrating the World Olympic Day, this is a good thing and it is necessary for the athletes to dream of playing in the Olympics and prepare themselves.”
The event also featured key university figures, including Principal Dr. John Chelladurai, who inaugurated the program, and Dr. Srinivasa Motiyele, who moderated the proceedings. The gathering included prominent attendees such as Dr. Nitin Ghorpade, Dr. Raneet Kishore, Director Kapilesh Mangal, Head of the Sports Department Dr. Dinesh Vanjare, Dr. Shashikant Singh, professors, students, and athletes.
