Mason Greenwood was thought of as a generational talent. However, in October 2022, Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced the discontinuation of the case due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that surfaced. Since the case, his life took a U-turn and the winger despite making a comeback to football could not fully utilise his talent.
He made his debut at 18 years old against Iceland as a late substitute during the Nations League group stages in September 2020. Shortly after that, Gareth Southgate sent him home for violating Covid-19 quarantine rules. Greenwood eventually fell out of the Three Lions squad. United loaned him out to La Liga club Malaga FC. He was impressive for them last season scored 10 goals and assisted 6 times for the club.
Greenwood left Old Trafford to join Ligue 1 Marseille in a £30 million deal earlier this summer as he looks to rebuild his career. He has already scored two goals and assisted one in his debut match for the club. The 22-year-old winger has played for Man U 129 times for the men’s first team, scoring 35. He was also prolific in the academy setup at Carrington.
Mason Greenwood’s switch will have no bars
The Man U academy graduate has also made the huge decision of leaving England and switching his nationality to Jamaica. Does this decision come after a continuous snub from the national team? As per reports the Jamaican Football Federation approached the FA with an official request to transfer Greenwood’s international registration, and the process is now underway.
It is very unlikely that FIFA will stop the change because their regulations allow it if a player has made no more than three competitive senior appearances before the age of 21. He is eligible for selection by Jamaica through his parents. Mason’s father Andrew comes from Jamaica and if the decision goes through, the winger will have the chance to play in the 2026 World Cup in the colours of Jamaica.
