Manchester City secured a comfortable 3-1 win over West Ham United to be crowned Premier League champions on the final matchday. The Cityzens could not afford any result apart from a victory as that would leave their fate in Arsenal’s hands. However, Pep Guardiola’s men have been at this stage several times in their career and they used their experience to secure a comfortable win at the Etihad
Phil Foden eased the pressure inside the first two minutes with a well-worked goal. He added another one to his tally in the 18th minute to put any sort of pressure to rest. The 23-year-old finished the season with 19 goals and 8 assists, ranking him 6th in the PL in terms of goals and assists this season. His exploits helped him win the Premier League Player of the Season award.
Just when it felt like City were going to walk away with a rampant win, Mohammed Kudus pulled one back for West Ham. His bicycle kick was spectacular and will be a contender for the goal of the season. However, Rodri put Manchester City back in a comfortable position as he scored the third goal in the 59th minute. From thereon City could not be stopped as they kept their lead and dominated the game. Tomas Soucek managed to get the ball in the back of the net, but his effort was ruled out by VAR. In the end, City managed to do enough to secure the three points and win the PL title for the fourth time in a row.
Manchester City will have their eyes on the double
While the blue side of Manchester will welcome the PL title for the fourth time in a row, they will also be aware that there is another trophy for contention. The team are set to face their city rivals – Manchester United in the FA Cup Final on May 25. This is going to be the repeat of the final last year, where City won the competition after beating the Rede Devils 2-1 at Wembley.
City have seven FA Cup trophies to their name. A win against United would put them third on the list of teams that have won the most FA Cups. Considering the form they are in, it seems hard to imagine that the Red Devils will defeat them, but Erik Ten Hag’s men have had a fairytale of a journey in the competition. Having won their last two PL games, United will be confident heading into Wembley to face off against their city rivals. A win for them would seal a European spot, but it seems difficult as City have the momentum in their favour.
