All eyes were on this fixture as a win for the Spurs would help Arsenal keep their top spot entering the final matchday. However, City showcased their champion mentality to grab a win, courtesy of two goals from their talismanic forward Erling Haaland.
Tottenham Hotspurs had a lot of chances to score during the game, but they were denied by the brilliance of City’s goalkeepers. Ederson, who started the game was subbed off in the 68th minute. He was replaced by Stefan Ortega, who had some vital saves to keep Manchester City in the game. The standout moment of the night was when the German keeper pulled off a stunning save with his leg on a one-on-one attempt from Heung-Min Son.
Son’s failure to convert the chance gave City another lifeline. They then played with a little more freedom and this paid off as Jeremy Doku was able to win a penalty in the 90th minute after he was fouled by Spurs’ Pedro Porro. Haaland added to his PL tally by burying the ball in the back of the net and securing the three points for City. The defending champions now have a final-day game against West Ham United. A win there would help them become the first team in the history of English football to win the Premier League four times in a row.
Manchester City are on the cusp of history
Manchester City have been one of the best teams in the world for a while now. They have dominated English football and their 2023 UCL triumph carried that into Europe as well. Although they crashed out of the competition this season, not many would argue if you said that they were the best team this season as well.
Despite being faced with injuries to their key players like Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Nathan Ake, John Stones and Ederson at various points in the season, the team have stayed strong and managed to pull through with positive results. Going into the final day, Manchester City need another win to be crowned as champions of English football for the fourth time in a row. This is a feat which no team has achieved so far, which shows how incredible Pep Guardiola’s men have been in the last few years.
The only chance Arsenal have to win the Premier League now is to hope that City lose on the final matchday to West Ham and they secure a win against Everton. However, the Hammers’ record against City is disastrous, their last win against the defending champions came in 2014.
Arsenal have done a great job to push Manchester City’s title charge to the final day of the season. They will be gutted to miss out on the trophy for the second time in a row. But this City team is a special side and getting the better of them in the league requires perfection, which the Gunners have failed to exhibit at times.
