Maharashtra juniors girls qualify for knockouts as unbeaten

Hockey Maharashtra Junior Women qualifies for the knockouts in the 2nd Hockey India Junior Women West Zone Championship 2024 at Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh) and Surat (Gujarat) respectively. The 2nd Hockey India Sub Junior Men’s and Women’s West Zone Hockey Championship 2024 at Surat, Gujarat has started from 23 to 30 July 2024.  

They registered a 13-0 win over Dadra & Nagar Haveli And Daman & Diu Hockey. Khushi was the star of the match scoring 7 goals which included a hat-trick. The other scorers were Tanushree Kadu (3 goals), Sanika Mane (2), and Sanjana Khetawat (1). The team finished with 9 points with an all-win (3 wins in a row) record. 

The Maharashtra Junior Men went down fighting 4-7 to Hockey Madhya Pradesh after trailing 1-4 at the halfway stage. The lone high point for Maharashtra was Arjun Hargude who scored 2 goals. This is the first loss for Maharashtra’s men’s team in first in 3 matches. They are currently third with 6 points in the round-robin league they engaged in the competition.

Sub-junior girls make a comeback

In the sub-junior level, the teams suffered mixed luck. The boys went down 0-6 to Hockey Madhya Pradesh in Pool A. The loss was Maharashtra’s first in two matches and completed their group engagements with 3 points, winning 1 match and losing 1. They are divided into two pools and will play on a round-robin (league) basis. 

The girls staged a second-half 3-1 comeback win against Goans Hockey. Maharashtra trailed 0-1 at halftime. Before goals off penalty corner conversions by Kenjale Anushka Bharat, Janhvi Chavan, and Shazelle Coutinho earned them their second win. Maharashtra with two wins out of two matches is third in the group with 6 points but behind Chhatisgarh Hockey and Madhya Pradesh.
