Liverpool were brilliant in their game against Tottenham Hotspurs as they grabbed a stunning 4-2 win at Anfield. However, post-game there was a hurl of abuse directed towards forward Darwin Nunez due to his poor finishing during the game. The 24-year-old had a clear goal-scoring chance when he was one-on-one with the Spurs keeper, but he managed to only hit the ball at the keeper’s body, denying Liverpool a fifth goal.
Despite the miss, Liverpool were able to see off a late surge by Spurs and grab a win at Anfield. Fans expressed their disappointment towards the forward online as they sent hate messages directed at him and his family. This has led the Uruguayan to take an extreme step as he deleted all Liverpool-related posts from his Instagram account. With just two games remaining, this might be a sign that the forward’s time at the club is coming to a sad end.
Despite all the hate pointed at him, Darwin Nunez has been an integral part of the Liverpool team this season. He has scored 18 goals in all competitions, which is a great number for a young forward. Nunez’s raw pace and tenacity have helped Liverpool in some difficult situations. However, their behaviour towards him might cost them another stellar player as the club are already fearing the exit of Mo Salah.
The hate directed towards Darwin Nunez is shambolic
Darwin Nunez has one of the best attributes in a striker which is his ability to be in goal-scoring positions. He certainly misses a ton of chances, but one can’t take away the work he puts in to create them. Having over 30 G/A in a season is a sensational achievement and despite having that, Darwin Nunez has been subjected to online abuse.
Liverpool were expected to have multiple trophies this season, but their dip in form over the past two months led to them crashing out of two cup competitions and drifting away from their rivals in the PL title race. However, it was not Darwin Nunez alone that forced all this on the club. Injuries have played a major role in the team losing their way as the season progressed. Nunez himself had a few injury concerns, but he played through them at times to keep the team in contention for titles.
Nunez deleting all Liverpool-related posts has led to a transfer rumour of him being on Barcelona’s radar. The timing seems perfect, but it looks unlikely that the Uruguayan would leave the club in the summer as the team know what he is capable of. With Salah ageing, the club will need a player to carry the team to trophies and Darwin Nunez certainly could be the one as he has raw passion and the game to be the face of the club.
