Lando Norris walks on the track after setting the fastest time in the sprint race ahead of the Brazilian Formula One Grand Prix auto race at the Interlagos racetrack in Sao Paulo. After the race, Max Verstappen’s lead in Formula One’s drivers’ world championship was reduced to two points on Saturday. Norris won the sprint race at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.
The title-chasing Briton gained the lead on lap 22 of the 24-lap race when Piastri changed positions with him. Before holding off three-time champion Verstappen in his Red Bull. The 24-year-old finished 0.593 seconds ahead of Piastri. The latter was 1.5 seconds ahead of the Dutchman, with Charles Leclerc in fourth place. Verstappen finished third on the road following a late move on Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
But was demoted to fourth two hours later. After stewards imposed a five-second time penalty for a Virtual Safety Car infringement from the last lap when running too fast behind Piastri. Verstappen leads Norris by 45 points with four races remaining — including Sunday’s and one sprint. Things may get worse for the Dutch driver. McLaren’s one-two finish moved them 35 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ title.
Lando Norris sets a new standard on the track
He broke Verstappen’s streak of four consecutive sprint victories this year. The race began in hot conditions, with an air temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. A track temperature of 47 degrees Celsius, makes tyres difficult to manage. The two McLarens started cleanly, with Piastri holding off Norris’ danger and Leclerc fending off Verstappen’s early push to finish third at the Senna S.
Does Lando Norris redefine the limits of speed? Norris was upset to be racing a second behind his McLaren teammate, requesting his crew to beg Piastri to move aside, but to no success until lap 10 when he was told to ‘give Lando DRS’ – a signal to trade places. He said, “I’m not proud of it, but it worked well and as a team, we had a good day — and thanks to Oscar.
